“There were a lot of initiatives to remind people to vote, but many of these did not include basic information about how to vote, when to vote and where to vote,” said Chris Cooper, director of WCU’s Public Policy Institute and associate professor of political science and public affairs.
The grant, worth $500, enabled students to create and supplement a range of voter initiatives, including collaborating with local election boards, first-year orientation classes, faculty, staff and other students. Only 11 North Carolina campuses received the grant.
WCU students created a voter information card that included all the basic information they thought other students needed to know about the mechanics of voting, said Cooper.
“We had it approved by the Jackson County Board of Elections, and then printed them for distribution,” said Cooper. “A sample of professors on campus received the cards to distribute in their upper-division classes, and to reach lower-division students, we went door-to-door in selected residence halls.”
The grant was sponsored by WCU’s Public Policy Institute, N.C. Campus Compact and the Puffin Foundation.
